I have been pouring over bridal magazines, websites, and blogs today. I have noticed a beautiful and inexpensive décor trend: paper products. This is not the twirled together streamers of your thirteenth birthday or grandmas doilies under her cookies (well actually there are doilies but done with some pop). I am just completely blow away with the beauty of all the paper décor I have found I just had to share. For the bride looking to keep cost down but still wants beauty how perfect are these ideas? Your guests will be talking for weeks about your decorations.

A Two-Steppe

A Warming Steppe

With the thought of moving into a new apartment and my boyfriend buying a condo, house warming ideas are floating through my head. A house warming party is a great time to have your friends over to show off your new digs. You’ve just moved in so keeping it simple is key, once you have settled in you can have friends over for a big sit down dinner.

The focus is to show of your new place with those that matter. Before the party make sure that you do a thorough cleaning of the new digs, people are going to be checking everything out! Sharing your new place with your friends and family doesn’t mean trashing the place. If the floors are a concern, make sure to have guests remove shoes. Be sure to offer inexpensive flip flops or slippers for guests to wear.

Keep food simple with food, easy to pick up, finger foods. Be sure to stock your bar, if you are going to be serving alcoholic beverages. Keep on hand: vodka, gin, rum, tequila, bourbon, wine and beer. You should also have mixers such as tonic, seltzer, orange juice, soda pop, cranberry juice, and lemonade. Having these mixers on hand, also leaves options for those who do not want to drink.

Before the party you need to decide if you will showing guests around or kindly asking a friend to. If you decide you will be doing the tour guide, nominate a friend to answer the door and greet guests. You can also have the option of self guided tours, print a floor layout for guests and label each room, and state any added details (such as renovations or note worthy décor).

Green with Envy Steppe

While I may not be Irish, St. Patrick’s Day has easily become one of my favorite holidays through the years. The older I get the better it seems to get. It is one of the few days a year where I can be assured that all my friends will come together. As a kid it meant donning head to toe green. As a teenager it meant a smile brought on by the Shamrock shake (thank you McDonald’s). In my 20’s it easily was the largest drinking party of the year. Now in my 30’s it has become a day to bring friends together, filled with great food (I could eat corn beef and cabbage everyday!!!) and a still some drinking (goodbye to the days of binge drinking though). Corn Beef and Cabbage Rolls:

Cook 6 Savoy cabbage leaves in boiling water, about 2 minutes. Rinse under cold water and pat dry; slice in half. Mix 1/4 cup each mayonnaise and chopped parsley and/or dill; spread on the cabbage leaves. Cut 2 slices rye bread into strips. Slice 1/2 pound corned beef into strips and toss with a spoonful of whole-grain mustard. Top the cabbage leaves with a few strips each of the bread and corned beef. Roll up and slice in half.

Irish Grilled Cheese: (I am a sucker for grilled cheese, it just gives me that all over good feeling so there had to be a way to work it into my St. Patrick’s Day feast)

Mash 4 tablespoons softened butter with 2 tablespoons each chopped parsley, scallions and chives. Spread the mixture on 4 slices white bread; top each with sliced Irish cheddar cheese and bread-and-butter pickles. Cover with 4 more bread slices. Spread plain butter on the outside of the sandwiches and fry in a skillet until golden on both sides. Spread the remaining herb butter on the warm sandwiches. Slice into quarters, then press the cut sides in more chopped herbs.

Beer Battered Broccoli

Whisk 1 cup beer, 1 cup flour, 1/4 cup chopped parsley and a pinch of salt. Let the batter rest 1 hour. Dip 4 cups broccoli florets in the batter and fry in 375 degrees F vegetable oil until golden brown, about 2 minutes. Drain on paper towels. Serve with sour cream.

A Seuss Steppe

What a perfect day for National Read Across America Day, as it is the one and only Dr. Seuss’s birthday (actual name Theodor Seuss Geisel).

Dr. Seuss books were always a childhood favorite, and still remain some favorites. He definitely began my love of books. Gather up your favorite Dr. Seuss books and have a reading marathon with your favorite little one.

"You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the one who'll decide where to go..." Dr. Seuss (Oh, the Places You’ll Go).

If you don’t have a little one in your life you can pay homage to the man of riddles with a Seuss inspired menu.

A grown up version of Green Eggs and Ham: (looks delish)

1 cup Cookin’ Greens Spinach (cooked & chilled)

24 Hard-Boiled Eggs (medium or large)

½ cup (125 ml) low-fat mayonnaise

½ cup (125 ml) low-fat cream cheese

1 tbsp (15 ml) Dijon mustard

1/8 tsp (1 ml) cayenne pepper

1/2 tsp (2 ml) sea salt

1/8 tsp (0.5 ml) black pepper

2 slices (12 g) pancetta, cooked until crisp and

broken into 1/2” pieces

2 tbsp (30 ml) finely chopped chives

Using a thin paring knife, cut eggs in half lengthwise.
Carefully remove yolks and place into a mixing bowl.
Mash with a fork until as smooth as possible. Set aside.
Arrange whites cut side up onto a parchment lined tray,
cover, and refrigerate until needed.
Add Cookin’ Greens – Chopped Spinach, mayonnaise,
cream cheese, and Dijon mustard to the bowl of a food
processor. Puree until combined thoroughly.
Add mashed egg yolks, cayenne pepper, salt, and black
pepper to spinach mixture, and pulse until smooth.
Cover and refrigerate for 1 hour to chill.
To Serve
Using a piping bag, carefully pipe spinach and egg filling into
each egg white half. Garnish with chives and a sliver of
crisp pancetta. Serve immediately.
COOKIN’ GREENS TIP: To help eggs sit upright on the
serving tray, carefully cut a small slice from the rounded
side of each egg white 1/2.

Be sure to wash your eggs down with a Pink Yink Ink Drink:

½ pint fresh or ½ cup frozen blackberries
1 cup milk
6 fresh strawberries (green tops removed) or ½ cup frozen strawberries, thawed
1 tsp honey

Put the blackberries in a blender and puree them.
Pour into a large glass.
Put the milk, strawberries and honey in a blender and blend.
Strain the mixture (optional).
Pour the strawberry mixture carefully on top of the blackberry mixture

Sunday, February 27th, 2011 marks the 83rd Academy Awards Show. What a great time to roll out the red carpet and get glammed up with your girlfriends. Two of Hollywood’s hot young stars are hosting this years awards, James Franco and Anne Hathaway. I’ll be tuning in just to see what their energy brings to the table this year.

Moet's Silver Screen Punch

1 (6 ounce) can pink lemonade concentrate, partially thawed
8 ounces pineapple juice
1 cup frozen strawberries
1/2 teaspoon grated ginger
1 cup vodka
1 bottle Moët & Chandon
1 pineapple, cut into rings and frozen

In a blender, combine pink lemonade concentrate, pineapple juice, strawberries, and ginger. Blend until smooth. Pour into a punch bowl. Add vodka and stir to combine. Just before serving, pour in Moet. Add frozen pineapple rings.

You can also send everyone home with they’re very own Oscar. One simple version would be to top cupcakes with an “Oscar”.

While many of us may still be putting away our holiday loot the holiday of love is just around the corner. Perhaps you are waiting in baited anticipation for that little jewelry box. But instead of making it about what you receive here are a few ways to make the day of love about both of you:

4. Plan to act like kids. Doing something carefree and void of holiday cliché will take the pressure off and you may find yourself valuing this more then that fancy dinner. Whatever you may do, remember the day is about celebrating your love. It is not about what you do or don’t get but a time to remind that special person in your life how much you care. Don’t put emphasis on the day being perfect just concentrate on your love for each other

A Super Steppe

Now this is my time to “partttttty”. For those who don’t know I am a super football fanatic. I am all for hosting a Super Bowl Extravaganza. My beloved Patriots did not make it all the way this year but that is no reason to not embrace this fun occasion (with my boyfriend’s adored Steelers making a go at it I have even more reason to plan a little celebration).

The main focus of the day will definitely be the game, but this a perfect time to indulge in bar food. You can keep things guest friendly by making mini servings. Guests are then able to try more things and fill up during commercials.

Having a plate of mini sliders will sure to please all guests….make sure to have plenty of toppings so guests can cater their burgers to their liking.

A great pairing to the sliders would be a crock pot of chili, which can also be used as a topping on the burgers. You of course will need some wings, no super bowl party is complete without them. Pinch cayenne pepper
Pinch ground cumin
Salt and pepper
20 ounces soft fresh goat cheese, crumbled
1 cup heavy cream
2 bags tortilla chips (18 to 24 ounces total)
3 ripe avocados, coarsely chopped
1 pint fresh pico de gallo or salsa
1 cup chopped cilantro

Directions:

In a medium saucepan, combine the black beans, lime juice, onion, olive oil, garlic, cayenne, cumin and a pinch salt and pepper. Cover and warm over medium-low heat, about 5 minutes. Remove from the heat and transfer half of the mixture to a food processor; blend until smooth. Return the puree to the saucepan and stir; cover to keep warm.
In a medium, microwaveable bowl, stir the goat cheese with the heavy cream. Cover and microwave on high power for 90 seconds; whisk until creamy. Set aside.
Place a large handful of tortilla chips in individual paper bowls, drizzle with goat cheese sauce and top with the black bean mixture, avocado, pico de gallo and cilantro. Serve with lime wedges

In the words of Rachel “Yum-O”! Super Bowl generally goes hand in hand with beer, pick up several different micro-brews to mix things up. You can also serve bloody mary’s for those who do not want beer.

The décor for your game can be kept simple. Plate your food on simple white platters for a clean and neutral look. If you feel the need to add some flowers, to bring a little girl power to this testosterone filled day, keep them simple as well. Plain white buds in simple square vases will add just enough but not over power. Most important is to make sure you have plenty of seating, all with great views of the television.

An Apologetic Step

As I am sure many of you have noticed I have not dedicated a lot of time to this blog or event planning business as of late. I blame that on the evil voice in my head that tells me “You don’t know what you are doing, there are others better then you, you’re just going to fail”. Well I am taking a stand to that voice and I am shouting back “I AM THAT GOOD and I CAN DO THIS”. Perhaps it is knowing that I am going home to be surrounded by the strong and amazing women in family. Each in their own way have molded me and supported me in ways I could never imagine. They are each inspirations to me. Women I aspire to be!

I guess I am really writing this blog today to voice that in my road down entrepreneurialism, I have caved to self-doubt. I have found though that the glimpse of doubt has now inspired me to try even harder. I do not come from a family of quitters, having that blood in veins keeps me moving and trying again, and again. With the love and support of allll the strong women in my life how could one fail. We all fall off the rope a time or two but it is that willingness to get back on, that will push us further.

Whether you have cold feet in the direction you are going in life or you are having cold feet about upcoming nuptials look to your inspirational go to’s. For me this is my mother (a single mother who never let me want for anything, the rock in my life), my grandmother (a women of pose and dignity), my aunt (a strong willed, outspoken lady who never let life’s catastrophes hold her back), Eleanor Roosevelt (read her quotes ladies she was a firecracker), and Martha Stewart (despite her legal woos you still can not discredit her the empire she has built).

I am looking forward to the holidays and being inspired by my wonderful family. May you all find the inspiration you need. The new year will bring many a blogs to all you Steppe Stone fans. Breathtaking views, clean fresh air, and a home away from home feel, sound like a wonderful idea to you? Well me too, while I am not packing my honeymoon bag Jackson Hole, Wyoming would make a great spot for honeymooners, as well as vacation goers.

Jackson Hole, Wyoming is known most for its close proximity to many ski resorts. Ski season here is from December to April. After hitting the slopes all day be sure to cozy up next to a romantic fireplace. Another great activity, (if stopping in Jackson between mid-December to April) is taking a horse-drawn sleigh through the National Elk Refuge. The refuge is home to over 6,000 elk during these months. You also MUST take a ride aboard “Big Red”, Jackson’s aerial tram. Aboard the 100 passenger tram you will get 360-degree views of Snake River Valley and Grand Teton National Park. There is also dogsledding and tubing down one of the many mountains to enjoy.

Take your hubby and saddle up to the bar at Cowboy Bar, one of Jackson Hole’s oldest establishments. (This will be sure to please your man and entitle you to some local shopping). A Shopping Step

Holiday work parties, family gatherings, social networking events, and weddings galore are sure to abound the schedule this coming up season. With so many different events to attend a major dress shopping spree is needed.

When dress shopping, weather for a party dress or THE dress, there are a few guidelines one should follow.

1. Have a visual in mind, know what you are leaning towards, pull pictures, really have a look in mind.

2. Bring a good girlfriend, yes the one that will be brutally honest as opposed to the one that will tell you what you want to hear. (For me this normally means bringing along my version of Jack)

3. Can not be said enough but wear undergarments that flatter you. Wear a convertible bra that lifts the girls, but can be changed around to fit the different dress styles you will be trying on. Make sure your under wear is not leaving lines in all the wrong areas.

4. Always remember to fit your largest area first, alterations are everyone’s friend. You should definitely have a good seamstress in your rolodex!

A Miss-Step

With everyone trying to make their wedding and parties stand out, we have seen some fumbles along the way!

Do NOT force your guests to dance!! Yes we all want to see a packed dance floor. Guests being forced onto the dance floor with a rendition of “hot potato” will not result in a happy dance companion. While on the topic of dancing full length organized dances ARE NOT FUN! The “Cha-Cha Slide”, the “Macarena” and/or the “Electric Slide” should NEVER go over 3 minutes. Anything longer then that will result in your guests clearing the floor.

Please don’t orchestrate an over the top garter extraction. There are guests around and watching your groom riffle up your dress don’t make them uncomfortable!

As a guest please be careful who bring. Don’t bring a guy/gal as a 1st date, likewise don’t bring a newly ended ex either. Both can lead to awkwardness. I have heard of many uncomfortable guests sitting threw a reenactment of a break-up during the reception.

Please, please, please when leaving the party don’t horde the favors. Take the one that was meant for you, but don’t bring enough home for the neighborhood.

We live in a society that has been taken over by the world of reality television. On any given day you can scan through the TV guide and find wedding show after wedding show; but these shows are showing an ugly side of the wedding reality.

Shows like” Bridezilla’s” (on the WE network) and “My Big Friggin’ Wedding” (on VH1) glorify bad behavior in the planning process. They focus on fighting, bad language, and poor manners. What happened to love, family unity, and the beauty of the love coming together. It is often hard to believe watching these shows that there is love there. Brides screaming at fiancé's that they hate them moments before a wedding, fist fights between brides and in-laws-to-be and expletives thrown at every vendor and person within reach, are norms within these shows (and sadly becoming a norm in our society)

Don’t use these shows as a guideline to acceptable behavior. A wedding should honor love, a wedding should bring families together, a wedding should be a joyous time. The reality show wedding is all about spoiled, over-spending brides behaving badly and at times being rewarded for it.

I choose to believe that united love is still the most important aspect to a wedding. My TV will not be found on these programs. I prefer to watch the realities that focus on the love and beauty in a wedding. “Say Yes to the Dress” (on TLC) is about the joy that is to be had finding a wedding gown. They also often give a glimpse of some of the beautiful weddings, as well as giving the storyline of how the happy couples came to be. There is also “I Purpose” (on the Style network) which focuses on the groom-to-be’s planning of the perfect proposal. Its nice to see a show that focuses on what the groom-to-be goes through, remember it is NOT just all about the bride.

A Healthy Step

Being a start-up entrepreneur means always working, you have no down time. I have two jobs on top of the work I do for my own business. When I am at my 9-5, I think about the upcoming weekend and what needs to be done for those events, I also think of blog ideas, wedding ideas, party ideas (god bless sticky notes). Once home I may cram in an hour at the gym and then its time to catch up on inspirational blogs and DVR'd wedding shows. Work is always on my mind or a part of me. Is this a bad thing? I tend to think not but after four grueling weekends of non-stop work my body has said enough is enough. That's right I am full blown sick and have no choice but to stop.

Stopping for me of course means I have surrounded myself with bridal magazines, my laptop, and have been working on wedding ideas from bed. Is it just in the entrepreneurial mindset to never fully stop?

With a pounding head and a pile of Kleenex, I have headed to the worldwide web, to not only catch up on all things wedding and party planning, but to also look for ways to keep the ever busy me healthy.

1. Get that Flu shot, the shot helps fight off the influenza up to 90%. Everyone is now offering them, you can go to your local Walgreens where they offer shots daily.

2. Keep hydrated and rested, a lack of sleep and dehydration can leave your body less able to fight off illness. Drink plenty of water and try not to change up your sleep pattern that often.

3. My two new best friends, Vitamin C and Zinc. They assist your bodies immune system in fighting off an infection and give it that extra boost.

4. Exercise, exercise, exercise! Not only will it help you de-stress another important component to staying healthy but also helps boost your immune system as well. If in the midst of a full blown cold you should take a break from the gym, but lifting weights or stretching can still be done.

5. Wash those hands, after you sneeze, when you blow your nose, cough, make sure you are preventing the passing of germs. Scrub down items you may share, phones and desktops.

6. Think before you eat, make sure you are getting those all important fruits and veggies in.

We are going into a season of running around, family gatherings, corporate parties, make sure you make time in your busy schedule to take care of yourself. Trust the one that doesn't always heed her own advice, you do not want to get sick!

Its that time of year again.... Is your child new in town or would you like to meet the newbies in the class and help them feel included?? Why not host a back to school party?

You can schedule the party like school classes: Home Room (guest arrivals), Art (Arts and Crafts), Phys Ed (games), Recess (open play), and Lunch Time.

For Home Room have every child bring a new book with them (include on invitation, specify on age weather chapter book or age appropriate). Then at the end of the party have the kids swap books, so each child goes home with a new book. Other favors to hand out: stickers, pencils, erasers, fun folders.

During Arts and Crafts you can have kids construct personalized pencil boxes. A practical take home favor they will be sure to use in the coming year. They can also put their other favors inside the box to take home. Make sure to supply lots of fun stickers, puff pens, permanent markers and stick-on jewels and shapes.

Blue Step

While being my favorite color (and definitely my grandmothers; blue everywhere, head to toe and ceiling to floor) blue is more my mood these past couple of days. I am embracing my blues, and in a step right out of "Valentine's Day'" (the movie), throwing them a party.

In searching for ideas, I was reminded of one of my favorite books, Le Petit Prince, by Antoine De Saint-exupery. In the 1st chapter, the narrator of the story shows his drawings to the adults around him, who scoff at the imaginative pictures. The young boy hurt, gives up drawing, deciding to grow up and become a pilot, leading him on a journey of friendship, the beauty of love, and of farewells. A line from the story has always stuck with me, "On ne voit bien quavec le coeur. Lessential est invisible pour les yeux"; "One sees clearly only with the heart. The essential is invisible to the eyes". In my business life and in my personal life this statement could be no more true. Seeing with the heart is how I have always done things. While others may think this foolish or stupid, I believe my heart has lead me down certain paths for a reason.

I know that in following my heart I will always wind up in the right direction. I believe in my imaginative drawings, perhaps the number crunching adults of "Le Petit Prince" do not understand, but there are others who see the vision and the beauty in me.

This make- believe party is a source of letting go and journeying down new paths, in hoping that other paths may intertwine again, and in believing in ones self.

A Sad Step

A horrible tragedy occurred back home, in my hometown of Manchester, CT today. A disgruntled employee opened fire at Hartford Distributor’s, killing 8 before taking his own life. This sad event really makes us ask sooo many questions. How does this happen, why does something like this occur? There will never be a solid answer for any of this, but what we can do is appreciate what we have and those around us. Call a loved one and tell them what they mean to you, you never know what tomorrow may bring. We all need to let go of hate and fill our hearts with love, there is NO reason for these senseless acts. Many have now been affected by this one man’s hatred and anger. My thoughts and prayers are with all of those affected today in this unfortunate incident, and the many others that may not have made the front page today.

High Profile Step

It is a BIG weekend in Rhineback, NY, Chelsea Clinton (daughter of former president Bill Clinton and current Secretary of State Hillary Clinton ) is to marry her long time boyfriend Marc Mezinsky.

This wedding has been the talk of the press for weeks, and is now finally here. I can’t wait to see the photos from this one, I feel like we have watched Chelsea grow up and are part of the family. So I began wondering about other high profile weddings and which ones I love.

A wedding that can NOT be left out when thinking of high profile weddings or notable weddings is that of Jacqueline Lee Bouvier and (then Senator) John F. Kennedy. There were over 800 guests at the September 12, 1953 nuptials. Of course there was also that classic stunning Jackie O style.

When talking about Kennedy weddings, the wedding of John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette must be mentioned. The wedding was small (40 guests) yet elegant. The September 21, 1996 wedding was held on Cumberland Island, Georgia.

Sticking with presidential weddings, was the marriage of Jenna Bush to Henry Hager on the sprawling 1, 600 acre Bush ranch in Crawford, Texas. Jenna was the 1st presidential daughter to marry in 16 years while her father was still seated.

As for non-presidential, yet still note worthy weddings:

Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale, the bride still managed to get her iconic style into the wedding.

Another favorite stylish bride, Christina Aguilera (to Jordan Bratman), held a 3 day long wedding extravaganza that had to make my list.

Congratulations to Chelsea Clinton and Marc Mezinsky! Here’s to many years of wedded bliss!

A Showering Step

So you have either stepped into the role of bridesmaid or maid of honor, now what? Put your party planner hat on because there is much to do. You have a bridal shower and bachelorette party to plan, as well as any wedding duties the bride has for you.

Make sure you consult with the bride as to when would be the best time for her shower (she has a lot going on, there is a little thing called wedding planning that she is in the process of). Once you know when you will be holding the shower, weather it be 2 weeks before the wedding or 2 months, invitations should go out a month prior. Be sure to ask what other showers are going to be held for your bride-to-be, you’ll want to have a different theme and try to keep separate guest lists (although there will be some over lap). You also want to make sure that you and the other bridesmaids have discussed a budget and what everyone will be responsible for.

Once you have your date and venue, its theme picking time. A traditional bridal shower normally follows the early afternoon tea party theme, think cucumber sandwiches, and crumpets. But it is okay to think outside the box, really take in to consideration the guest of honor. Some fun ideas:

1. A Honeymoon theme: decorate towards the destination, use maps from their planned trip, music, food, let guests know to bring gifts that the couple will use on their honeymoon (great gift ideas would be a couples massage at the resort or day trip passes) you can still sneak in those when the sun goes down items.

2. A Cooking Class: is your bride-to-be a real foodie or perhaps she has a thing or two to learn about cooking, either way this could be the theme for her, have guests bring a family recipe or favorite dish and create a bridal cookbook for the happy couple, gifts can range from kitchen/baking items to more classes, or steak of the month clubs.

3. Charity Theme: perhaps your couple has lived together and has everything, or they’re very philanthropic, guests can bring food, clothing, or cash to donate to the brides favorite charity in lieu of gifts.

Whatever theme you choose make sure it speaks to the bride-to-be and not the party you would like. Keep the bride-to-be in the loop but do NOT add to her chaotic schedule. The more bridesmaids or friends you can get to help the better, just make sure everyone has a specific task.

A Friendship Step

You’re best girlfriend has just gotten engaged, duly noted by the shiny piece of hardware she is now sporting on her left ring finger, and waving excitedly in your face. She now utters those words you knew had to be coming… “Will you be my bridesmaid?”. You of course respond with an immediate “yes” but what exactly does this mean?

The tradition of the bridesmaid was started to ward off evil spirits, in the time of the Roman Empire. Bridesmaids were dressed similar to the bride (and likewise the groomsmen akin to the groom) as to keep evil spirits from being able to easily identify the happy couple. Times have changed though and many brides choose to have their back-up dressed much differently. The primary role of today’s bridesmaid is to be that shoulder to lean on during the planning process, and be a stress detourant.

Things you should expect once you have taken on this role:

1. D.I.Y. guru- this may mean giving up Friday nights to stuff envelopes or a Saturday at the beach to hand make felt flowers for all the wedding flowers. Put in your glue-gun time and do it with a smile, remember you may someday need her help at your own wedding.

2. Personal Shopper- you may be loading up your car on your already too short lunch break with a 100 mason jars, which you happily had to drive across town to pick up. It also means scouting out bridesmaid dresses (use this to your advantage, email the bride that great J. Crew dress you found before she finds a more impractical dress) and picking up any other wedding necessities the bride may need.

3. Party Planner- get things rolling, there is after all the shower and the bachelorette party to plan, team up with the maid of honor and get the process rolling, don’t leave details until the last minute.

Remember to do everything with a smile, yes you can voice your opinion (when it is asked for), and know the bride asked you because you are important to her.

Things one should not do as a bridesmaid: being a bossy bridesmaid (this is NOT your wedding and it is not your way or the highway), a Debbie downer (if you do not want to be part of the wedding politely decline when asked, don’t sulk your way through), the jealous bridesmaid (your day will come, but this is not it), you are there (I repeat) to make the brides life easier NOT add to the stress.

A Historical Step

So right down the street form me is this little museum that you may have heard of, the Chicago History Museum. I have been here for over 3 months and until today had still not visited. (Crazy since it is just blocks away) Another little known fact about the museum is that it is free on Monday’s. Finding myself with little to do today I decided to take advantage of “free Monday” and check out the “I Do, Chicago Ties the Knot” exhibit. I am so glad that I went and took in this little gem.

From May 22, 2010 until January 3, 2011 the history museum is featuring the “I Do, Chicago Ties the Knot” exhibit. Unfortunately I have no photos I can share, as you can not take pictures in the exhibit, but I can tell you about all the beautiful things I saw and learned.

One of the first things I saw was 3 beautiful fans from the 1800’s. Flirting in those days was something far different then it is today. Women actually used fans to convey messages; by simply placing a tip of the finger on the fan a woman was saying she wanted to speak with a gentlemen, however if she placed the fan by her left ear it meant that she wanted that man to go away. I may have to invest in a fan and see if this still works.

There were so many beautiful gowns, bridesmaids dresses, and other wedding attire. It just amazes me the detail put into these gowns, the construction is just awe inspiring. If you get a chance to go check it out be sure to look for my three favorite gowns:

1. A stunning gown from 1916, worn by Katherine Keith. The gown is made of silk satin, lace, chiffon, ribbon and flowers. When I think wedding dresses this is what I envision. A wide skirt supported by a boning structure (known as the pannier), a square (just low enough) neckline, a pointed waistline and pleated embellishment. This gown just screams wedding other then its beige coloring.

2. OMG, how incredible this 1927 dress worn by Mary Louise Wright is. This one will certainly grab your attention upon entering the room, just for its rich blue color. The flapper style dress was made of delicate silk crepe with glass beads and a heavy silk embroidery. The heavy embroidery helped to weigh down the crepe so that it did not blow around.

3. This final dress I want to bring to your attention, I could not take my eyes off of. If planning my own wedding I would very much want a dress mirroring this amazing piece. My wedding gown twin, was worn by Louise de Marigny Dewey in 1934, in what was said to be “THE social event of the year”. A gorgeous silk satin, that looked like butter, with lace, rhinestone and pearl accents. This dress reminds me of old Hollywood, with its long sweeping train and bias cut. One had to feel nothing but glamorous in this gown!

Throughout the exhibit they also had “wedding songs” of today and yesterday playing.

I was reminded how much I love this song and how much it speaks to what a wedding is all about.

If you can, go see this in person, you have until January 3, so there is still plenty of time. This is definitely one that should be experienced for anyone planning on getting married or just has a love for fashion. Grab your bridesmaids and go get inspired!

What a touching sentiment! I just finished watching Leap Year staring Amy Adams and (the new love of my life) Matthew Goode. The movie is riddled with great quotes and beautiful scenery (and I mean Ireland, not the good looks of Goode). If you have not see this one, pop up some popcorn, grab some girlfriends and get ready to want to plan a trip to Ireland (thanks to Leap Year and P.S. I Love You, Ireland is high on the places to go)

A World Traveler Step

Prior to moving to Chicago, I had rarely been off the east coast. This being the case, I spend portions of my day dreaming of far away places. I have a long list of dream vacation spots, which hopefully one day I will get to. Moving further and further up that list, as I read more about it, is Siem Reap, Cambodia.

What a great place to escape to on your honeymoon too, there are many great deals to be had. I believe your honeymoon should be a dream location that you would not be traveling to once you have kids. Cambodia being about a 20 hour flight, I am sure few couples are bringing along the kids, before starting that family visit this beautiful wonder.

You can find some great deals on hotels in Siem Reap. One to check out would be Kool Hotel (How can you not check it out with that name?), http://www.KoolHotel.com. This hotel offers great value (average price being $34-45), spectacular hospitality (eager to please according to ALL reviews) and has a great location. In the morning fill up on their 5-star breakfast before heading out to tour temples and ruins. After a long day exploring they do have a pool to relax in. Another hotel to look into the Viroth Hotel, http://www.Viroth-Hotel.com. Hotel Viroth brings lots of style with large minimally decorated rooms. They have a rooftop pool and jacuzzi, along with a rooftop bar lit up with fairy lights at night.

An architecture geek at heart, I am dying to see the majestic temples that have been standing in Cambodia for over a millennium. Sunrises are supposed to be a thing of beauty, glowing in reds and oranges while the sunset is supposed to be stunning, putting on a spectacular show at Angkor Wat (famous temple). For about $20 you can take an elephant ride to see the views from Phnom Bakeng. On the romantic side, you could also take a ride with Angkor Balloons, for $15 you get a 10-minute venture 820 feet into the sky. A little on the pricier side you could also take a helicopter ride around Angkor Wat for about $90.

The local food is said to be a must while there as well, as is the local shopping. This is definitely worth a mention to your honey and off the beat and path of your typical honeymoon jaunts.

A Swimingly Good Step

The heat is on here in Chicago and across much of the country. My next birthday inspiration has a way to keep cool in the hot hot sun while still having fun for the little one's birthday. This is one, my "little fish" would surely love, hope his parents will too.

You can rent out a local swim center, if the majority of the kids are little see if you can rent out a wading pool instead. Fill the pool area with lots of beach balls and some blow up fish (tried and true Oriental Trader is a good place to find these). The majority of your time will be spent in the pool so games or crafts are not neccessary.

For table decorations (for the gift table and the food table) hang fish netting around the tables, you can place blue table cloth underneath for an ocean look, then place plastic crabs, lobsters and seashells throughout table. You can once again keep food simple for this party; have "Octopus Hot Dogs" - make these by slicing a hot dog in four or more(depending on how many tenticles you want), but not all the way through, then boil it until the ends curl up, serve fresh fruit in sand pails and use the shovel for a spoon, and "Oceanade" fruit punch (get blue fruit punch and freeze ice cubes in a fish shaped ice tray, you can add food coloring to give the fish life).

Send kids home with their own sand pail (you can personalize each pail with the child's name, with t-shirt paint), a beach ball, some Goldfish, gummy sharks, and kiddy sunglasses (all inside the sand pail).

A Princess's 1st Step

The first batch of little kiddies I call myself a proud aunt to are all beginning to turn one. I may not be able to be there (again) but I can imagine what the parties would be like. This party is designed around my favorite little princess.

Of course the princess party is filled with all things princess, starting with the rolled out pink carpet to greet her highness's guests. A fun game to have kids play upon walking in would be to have them guess how many kisses it will take to turn the frog prince. Have a photo of the frog prince set up next to a bowl of Hershey Kisses, have each guest write down how many kisses they think are in the bowl on a piece of paper as they enter the party. Make sure you have the proper princess pen for the royal guests to write with. At the end of the day the guest who is closest wins the bowl. After making guesses you can have the kids decorate their own foam tiaras (and pirate hats if there are any boys), with the help of mom and dad of course. Have plenty of colorful gems in different sizes and colors and glitter pens to make those tiaras shine. During the party you can also have the kids play "Find Snow Whites Apples". Hide plastic apples in the yard or house for them to find. Use plastic apples from Oriental Trading Co. that can be filled with little trinkets (age appropriate).

When planning food keep it simple, pb&j sandwiches, or cheese sandwiches (if there are alergies, check with parents beforehand), cubes of watermelon and/or cantaloupe, and princess fruit snacks. You can also use a cookie cutter to cut your sandwiches into fun shapes like tiaras and stars. For this little princess's party I would also jazz up her high chair, get different colors of tulle fabric (pink, purple, and silver) attach to the tray portion of the high chair using double sided crafting tape. It may also be a good idea to get her highness her very own cake (a mini cake) to destroy and eat on her own. That is one of the best parts of a 1st birthday party, getting pictures of the little one covered in cake.

If you're having the party outdoors another great source of entertainment would be to have a castle shaped bouncer, kids can spend hours in a bouncer, giving adults time to socialize too. You could also rent a princess to come to the party, many will read a story or make-over your little ones.

Monkeying Around Step

As I said yesterday, I have several friends that are now pregnant. Yesterday's rocker baby shower, prompted requests for more shower help. Being here in Chicago I can offer ideas and make suggestions. I would love to see my creations come to life myself but take pride in the fact that my friends look to me for guidance on these matters.

The shower today is based around the theme "Monkeying Around". I actually have two inspiration boards going with this one, as I could not decide between the traditional monkey or the modern sock monkey. The monkey theme can also be carried over to the baby's first birthday; "Our little monkey's turning 1".

For the first inspiration board I went with a classic jungle monkey feel. I would cover tables in jungle animal print fabric (zebra, giraffe, cheetah) or do solid brown with animal print runners. I would also fill the space with LOTS of hanging plants, and various stuffed monkeys (which can later be used in the nursery). As a favor for guests, I would give out mini-Chunky Monkey ice cream from Ben & Jerry's.

While coming up with ideas for the above inspiration board, I began staring at my beloved slippers...the sock monkey slipper (thank you Target). This led me to begin compiling ideas for a sock monkey themed shower, equally as cute but a totally different feel.

This theme is much more modern. I would hang lots of red and white paper lanterns or balloons, in the venue hall, to give it that modern feel. Since the sock monkey is a childhood classic, I would also incorporate some other classics, that actually tie into the red and white theme. To hold the beverages use red and white galvanized buckets. I would also purchase old fashion style Coke bottles instead of cans. Make sure you also include striped straws with your drinks. To hold gifts, and add a little more old school charm to your gift table, get a "Radio Flyer" and place it on the table, stack gifts in and around the wagon (the wagon will come in handy for the proud parents to be). As a favor give boxes of "Red Hots" or package up red jelly beans and place a sock monkey sticker on each bag.

A Rockin' Baby Step

It seems baby fever is once again in the air among my friends. While I hold my breath in these times, I do love all things baby, just not for me YET! And with so many baby's on the way to make me a proud auntie, I have begun thinking about shower ideas. When it comes to the baby shower, I do not think they need to be all frilly and dainty to signify a girl or blue driven for a boy. I have a a couple friends in mind with this Rock 'n' Roll theme shower, these girls themselves are too bad a** to follow along with a cookie cutter shower.

Some fun decoration ideas: To really get that rocker feel, talk to a local club about holding the shower there. Get 3 guitar cases (used), if the interior is gross, get some fabric that matches your party decor and tack it to the inside of the case, in this case pink or zebra print, then set 2 of the cases open on top of the gift table to hold gifts, in the middle of the two, place the third case upright and have the baby's name airbrushed to the outside in a coordinating color. On your table tops another fun rock decor idea would be to scatter guitar pics over the table. If you can get your hands on a baby picture of the proud momma-to-be and papa-to-be, photo shop them in white and black and add fun colored mohawks to them, you can blow these up big and put them on the venue doors like rock posters.

I am not a big fan of shower games, but do see how they can be good icebreakers in a crowd of strangers. Here are some, not too corny, game ideas:
1. Match the celeb baby name with the celeb examples: Coco Riley (Courtney Cox and David Arquette), Apple and Moses (Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin), Harlow Winter Kate (Nicole Richie and Joel Madden, you get the idea.
2. Take the label off of baby food jars and see who can guess the most correctly.
3. The tried and true game of guessing the mom-to-be's belly size with a yarn of string.

Another cute shower idea is to have a diaper raffle. Ask guests to bring diaper packages ranging in size from Newborn-2, for every package they bring guests will be entered into the raffle. For raffle prizes you can buy a set of movie tickets and/or gift certificates to area restaurants. This is a great way to get the proud parents a good supply of diapers, which they will greatly need!

Since 1947 brides-to-be have been flocking to downtown Boston, to find a steal on their bridal gowns. While Boston still remains a hot spot for "The Running of the Brides", you can now find this event at other Filene's Basement's.

This Friday, July 23rd, 2010, Chicago is hosting its "Running of the Brides". If you are a bride-to-be on a budget this is the place for you; gowns will run from $249to $699, normally marked $900 to $9000 plus. Do make sure you love that purchase though, all gowns are bought off the rack and are NON-returnable.

Be warned ladies bring a friend (or two), the more hands the better. Arrive early, many line up the night before to score that once in a lifetime deal. Leave your self conscience at the door, unfortunately once dressing rooms are full many are forced to try gowns on right there on the sales room floor.

A Tastey Step

I have got a HUGE sweet tooth, however in this summer heat I do not want to bake. I thought I would pass along some of my summer favorites, that don't involve being stuck in the kitchen. These would each be a welcome addition at your next BBQ.

Strawberries with Cream Cheese
32 Strawberries
11-12 ounces of cream cheese
1/2 cup confectioner's sugar
1/4 teaspoon almond extract
2 tablespoons semi-sweet or milk chocolate, grated

To prepare- cut a thin slice from the stem end so the strawberry can stand up upright, place strawberry cut side down, cut the strawberries into 4 wedges being careful not to cut all the way through, carefully fan the wedges out being careful not to break them, place aside.
In a mixing bowl, beat together the cream cheese, confectioner's sugar, and the almond extract until it is light and fluffy, fold in the grated chocolate.
Using a teaspoon fill the strawberry towers with the cream cheese mixture (for cleaner presentation use a decorative bag with a decorative tip to fill the strawberries). Top with a little more grated chocolate.

Frozen Butter Pecan Crunch
2 cups graham cracker crumbs
1/2 cup melted butter
2 packages instant vanilla pudding mix
1 quart butter pecan ice cream, softened
8 ounces frozen whipped cream topping, thawed
2 Heath bar candy bars, crushed

To prepare- In a bowl combine the graham cracker crumbs and butter, once combined press mixture into the bottom of an ungreased 9x13 baking pan, chill in the freezer.
In a large mixing bowl, beat the pudding mix with milk until blended, then fold in the ice cream and whipped cream topping, then spoon over the crust.
Finish by sprinkling with the crushed Heath bar and freeze. Remove 20 minutes prior to serving.

Grilled Pineapple with Mascarpone Cream
1 tablespoon chopped hazelnuts
1 lemon juiced and zested
2 (8 ounce) containers mascarpone cream
3 tablespoons honey
8 slices (or more depending on party size) peeled, fresh pineapple 1/2 inch thick

To prepare- heat the grill to medium heat and lightly oil the grates.
Place the hazelnuts in a small saucepan over medium heat, shake pan until nuts are golden (about 3 minutes), remove from heat and set aside.
In bowl mix the lemon juice, lemon zest, mascarpone cream, and honey, set aside.
On heated grill place pineapple slices on grates till they get score marks (about 3 minutes each side).
To serve, plate 2 pineapple slices on plate and top with a generous dollop of mascarpone cream, then sprinkle with hazelnuts.

A Favorable Step

So we have all been to a wedding, and if like me, you put some thought into the gift to give to the bride and groom. So how disappointed were you when walked away with a key-chain photo of the bride and groom, or small bottle of bubbles? Most of us walk out of the wedding wondering what to do with these trinkets or just leaving them behind (signifying that the bride and groom could have spent the money more wisely). So what would be a good a wedding favor you ask?

The most practical way to go may be the edible favor. You've been boogieing on the dance floor, consuming alcohol, and now you're on your way back to your hotel room. Instead of spending a fortune diving into the mini bar wouldn't it be nice to have that treat you walked away with? Instead of serving cake at the reception, have individual slices of cake boxed up for guests to take with them(this will also save you money because you can just slice cake from a sheet cake instead of spending money on an elaborate cake).
You could also do candy covered apples, with the theme "apple of my eye". When it comes to edibles just be aware of where you store them or the climate conditions...nothing worse then your beautiful truffles becoming a bag of melted chocolate.

There are other unique and fun options you can choose if you do not want to go with an edible favor:
~chapstick..."sealed with a kiss"
~playing cards..."perfectly suited" or "two of a kind"
~removable tattoos with your names, imagine getting a picture of your great grandma donning your brand, and guests will have fun with them at the wedding but be able to wash off once home
~in colder months a nice idea is heart shaped hand warmers, guests can slip them into their gloves when leaving
~a charitable donation..."spreading the love", guests don't have to worry about taking home a favor they don't want, and can leave feeling good because money was given to a worthy cause in their honor

With a little thought you can give your guests a small trinket they will enjoy, instead of leaving behind. After all, no one wants to end up on the worst favor list!

A French Step

HAPPY Bastille Day!!! How are you spending this French national holiday? If you are like me this 14th day of July, commemorating the storming of Bastille in 1789, which marked the beginning of the French Revolution, you too want some French food. I can feel the foie gras melting in my mouth or the buttery saltiness of escargot, I'd even be happy with a baguette and some goat cheese.

New to Chicago, the french restaurant is one I have not experienced yet, so straight to Google I went to locate some options. What do you think?

1. FireFly, 3335 N Halsted St, billing itself as a funky, intimate bistro, it is supposed to have GREAT martinis in big over-sized glasses.

2. La Creperie, 2845 N Clark St, casual french fare specializing in...can you guess...that's right crepes.

My first two choices were chosen primarily on location, as the are both in my neck of the woods but I did decide to see what else was out there and found a few more that have my tastebuds yearning for some french fare.

3. Cafe Matou, 1846 N. Milwaukee Ave, the reviews seem consistent f-a-b-u-l-o-u-s french food, cozy atmosphere.

4. KiKi's Bistro, 900 N. Franklin St, french country decor, the crowd a bit on the older side BUT supposed to have THE best french onion soup in Chicago; get into this bistro soon they will be closing down on August 28th to reconceptualize.

5. Les Nomades, 222 E. Ontario St, the MOST formal of the above (note: a jacket is required for men), offering 4-5 courses, having been in business for 32 years you can expect expertly prepared dishes.

The French side of me is dying to dig my fork into any of the amazing dishes I have read these restaurants offer. Now to decide who to choose for my Bastille Day celebration.

A Step Along the Nightmare Side

"For it is plain, as anyone can see: we're simply meant to be.", with those words Jack Skellington and Sally sent my mind racing last night. Nightmare Before Christmas has been one of my favorites since its release in 1993 after watching it last night I thought how fun it would be to design a wedding around. While pondering what would make the perfect Nightmare Before Christmas wedding I thought of the perfect bride, my girlfriend who was born on Halloween and loves the day and all things macabre. So with her in mind, Jack, Sally and I began our journey to Halloween Town to plan a perfectly nightmarish wedding....

The key to this wedding is outlandish decor and lighting. Picture walking through a replica of the Halloween Town entrance, inside you are greeted by black clothed tables with dark candelabras or black lamps, set with white and silver place settings, surrounded by white poppy flowers. The walls are splashed with varying eerie colors of green and purple, the dance floor is patterned after the Nightmare Before Christmas scroll design. Hanging from corners and around the bar, large cobwebs, with over-sized spiders, pumpkins of varying faces and sizes give off a warm glow. For an added effect you can have bartenders add dry ice to peoples drinks.

The bride herself of course would not be caught in a white dress, (how fabulous is the black dress in the storyboard?) and her bridesmaids in a Gothic inspired number (for this wedding I would try to find the dress in gray/black or purple/black not the red above). The groom and groomsmen would be head to toe black, with either gray or purple ties and black converse. If you really get into the Halloween idea, then you could have your guests come in costume.

You could also have a projector showing a slide-show of movie scenes, and a live Jack and Sally mingling among guests. The first dance can be to "Sally's Song", I prefer the Amy Lee version. This wedding can take place anytime of year BUT of course the perfect time would be in October. Enjoy your trip into Halloween Town and if you need help diving in further I am always around for suggestions.

"Chicago Style" Step

The new 432 page information filled bible of Chicago brides made its debut at The Sax Chicago last Thursday...and much like its cover had a modern yet classic feel to it. If you have not picked up your copy of Chicago Style Weddings I really suggest you do. This issue is jam packed with style ideas and Chicago vendors.

The launch party took up the 4th floor, and was jam packed with all of Chicago's fine talent. Upon walking into the venue you were greeted by a huge media screen; great to project your monogram onto for the modest or display photos of your love story. All the walls where up-lit with a red glow, giving the party a real seductive feel.

In one of the side rooms, cakes provided by Bittersweet Pastry Shop were on display, along with mini fruit tarts being passed around on trays. Judy Contino, Bittersweets cake designer, was on hand to answer any questions and show off three of her delectable treats. (Judy- I am still looking for you and your dog on my walks in Lakeview)

A Thankful Step

An apology to my blog readers, I can't believe it has been 5 days since I have updated or shared any new information with you. We all have hectic lives; a bride with a 40 hour work week trying to plan her wedding on her own; a mother with soccer practice, ballet class, and piano lessons, on top of running a household; or the new entrepreneur, like me, taking on extra work to make ends meet while starting up and still finding time to work on the new business. While living our lives on overdrive, we should still take a little break to appreciate the things around us. Pour yourself a cup of tea tonight, sit in a quiet comfortable place, and really think about all that you have to be thankful for....

Things I Am Thankful For:
1. a truely supportive family and friends who offer guidance, shoulders to cry on, and a laugh when needed.
2. a warm comfortable bed to come home to after those long grueling hours.
3. a beautiful city to open my eyes to everyday...from the lake, to the skyscrapers, to the hospitality of its inhabitants, Chicago you are my home!
4. the ability to learn and grow, growth and change happen all the time, I choose to embrace it, I never want to be blinded by the ignorance that I no longer have to learn or need to learn. I am thankful for the chance to grow from that new found knowledge.

I could continue but today I am thankful for these. And as I close my eyes after this long day, I can go to sleep with a smile; having these things to be thankful for gives me a sense of fulfillment.

Wow talk about a heat wave, temperatures around the country in the upper ninety's even breaching the hundred degree mark. All this heat actually has me thinking about some winter fun. Snowflakes, snow globes, beautiful ice sculptures....

Create a winter wonderland for your guests...have a gingerbread bar, serve crowd favorites such as hot chocolate and warm apple cider. When choosing a signature cocktail stick with your winter oasis and go with an eggnog martini.

EGGNOG MARTINI
Ingredients
Crushed graham crackers, optional for garnish
1 1/2 ounces dark rum
1 ounce spiced rum
1/2 ounce vanilla vodka
3 ounces store bought eggnog
1/4 ounce simple syrup
cinnamon stick, optional for garnish
Directions
1. Dip the rim of a martini glass in water and then into the crushed graham crackers.
2. Combine dark rum, spiced rum, vodka with eggnog and simple syrup in an ice-filled martini shaker. Shake well, strain and pour into a prepared glass. Garnish with a cinnamon stick.

So I grew up in a small town, a town with two stoplights and my horses in the backyard. Being that small town girl weddings that really speak to me are the rustic country filled events. I envision a barn in the back drop, hay bails used for ceremony seating, a rustic horse carriage filled with presents. I think a good country wedding imparts a casual relaxed feel on its guests, the uniting of two families feeling more like a family reunion.

Adding to the casual charm, good ole southern cooking...fried chicken, corn on the cob, strawberry shortcake favors. As with any wedding, if this is the theme you are going with, you should take in to consideration the seasons. Make sure to provide guests with proper necessities, if the temperature will be sure to drop at night provide wraps, if its going to be real sunny provide parasols,or if it has been buggy make sure to have plenty of bug spray on hand to go around.

I hope everyone is enjoying their fourth of July, whether with family and friends BBQing, taking in a fireworks display or sending prayers to the men and women fighting overseas, may you all have a happy and safe "Independence Day".

Today marks the day commemorating the "freedom" of America. On July 4th, 1776 the Declaration of Independence was signed asserting our separation from Great Britain. The declaration gave us the meaningful statement that "All men are created equal.".

A few fun facts for you this holiday:
The great "Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest" on Coney Island in New York was believed to have begun in 1916 as a dispute between four immigrants who were trying to prove who was more patriotic.
The Boston Pops Orchestra has been setting music to a great fireworks display on the Charles River since 1973.
And the Macy's fireworks in New York City has been televised on NBC since 1976.

July 4th, 1979 also marks my independence day, I was released from the hospital after being born over a month early. Today I choose to celebrate that independence and be thankful for all those who have supported me and helped me grow. I am still growing and learning that independence does not mean going it alone, but rather surrounding yourself with those who believe in and support you. Thank you!!

I would aslo like to just send a BIG thank you to all the men and women that are still fighting to keep America the land of the free and helping others attain their freedom, you are truely the heroes of America! May everyone have a safe and happy fourth of July!

The "family-style" service. This is a great mix of the classic formal sit down and the buffet, a way to serve up casual elegance. It can also be cost effective, reducing the amount of servers needed and is often times less expensive than an individually plated dinner.

Most times guest are seated to a chef plated salad...I can see all the farmers market goodness...in summertime think bright tomato salads or winter think Roquefort pear salad. When salad plates are cleared plattered entrees and sides are brought to the table, for guests to pass. Your guests are then able to serve themselves, taking as little or as much as wanted.

When properly executed I think you will find that many of your guests will feel more welcomed with this service. It also induces more interaction between your guests. After-all when was the last time you had a speechless dinner at home?

A Step Past Disagreement

The definition of a disagreement is a failure or refusal to agree. In business and in life disagreements happen.

Whether fiance's squabbling over which cake they want or which friends get invited; to a mother & daughter not seeing eye-to-eye on a dj or a live band; a President of a corporation and an Executive Assistant not agreeing on which venue to use for the next event; everyone sees things their own way; it is when we can put ourselves in someone else's shoes, and openly hear each other out, that solutions are discovered! (Thank you mom)

The people we surround ourselves with do want the best for us. In a time of disagreement it is often hard to see that, but when you take the time to step back often times you will see that the differences aren't so different. Take the time to breath and think before speaking (a concept I myself have trouble with, I often have a shotgun reaction). Taking that few minutes to step outside the disagreement can often give us new perspective. Know that that person is fighting for what they believe is best for you...which really just means they care. And isn't that what we all want...to surround ourselves with people that care about us?

For a refreshing treat at the party serve a custom cocktail. I love the idea of a sour cherry mojito, fitting in with our cherry party theme.

Sour Cherry Mojito Recipe:

Ingredients
bunch of mint
sour cherries (pits and stems removed), lots of them
2 oz white rum
plenty of crushed ice
soda water or sparkling mineral water
about ½ oz agave nectar or simple syrup to taste
squeeze of lime
1. In a highball or tall mixing glass, gently muddle together 1 large sprig of mint and a handful of cherries.
2. Add to glass the rum, ice, soda water and agave nectar/simple syrup. Stir until the beverage is well combined and glass is nice and frosty. Add squeeze of lime and fresh mint for garnish. Enjoy!!!!!

I had the wonderful opportunity the other day to sit down with Paula from Swirlz Cupcakes in Lincoln Park. Upon walking into the quaint shop not only are you greeted with a case full of delectable cupcake treats but also the that wonderful aroma of fresh baked goodness.

On a day where I spend the day remembering all the wonderful memories I have of my father, I thought I would look into where Father's Day began and give you some great Father's Day traditions of your own.

So where did Father's Day begin? The tradition of Father's Day began back in 1910 but took 62 years to become an actual holiday. Thanks to Sonora Louise Smart Dodd, the oldest of 6 of a Civil War vet, we now celebrate father's day. While in church listening to a mother's day sermon Dodd began to contemplate how to honor fathers. On June 19, 1910, in Spokane, Washington, with the support of the Spokane Ministerial Association and the YMCA the towns children wore red roses, to honor living fathers and white roses to honor those that had passed. Then in 1924 President Calvin Coolidge recommended that the 3rd Saturday in become a national holiday but it wasn't until 1972 when President Richard Nixon issued a permanent proclamation that father's day have its national observance. And Sonora Louise Smart Dodd is now known as the "Mothers of Father's Day".

So know you're asking yourself what to do for that special dad? As a child I got a big kick out of making breakfast in bed for my dad. My dad had taught me how to make scramble eggs in the microwave. I would wake up early and make scrambles with far too much cheese and toast and dutifully my father ate them like they were a 5-star meal, shells and all. Make some homemade cards and bring dad some eggs, fruit, and coffee in bed.
Another great idea, is getting dad a book all about fathers, have your little one but the date on the inside cover with a message all their own. After breakfast in bed dad and child can curl up and read the story together, sure to leave lasting memories. A few great choices are: "Father's Day" by Anne Rockwell, "I love My Daddy" by Sebastien Bach, or "Daddy Kisses" by Anne Gutman.
For those that have a little artist on your hands, have your child draw up a picture just for dad. You could frame the picture or for a unique idea scan the picture into your computer, shrink the artwork down to business card size, print, then laminate. Dad can now carry around the this little token of love with him everywhere in his wallet.

For all the fathers out there, "Happy Father's Day!!", enjoy the special moments that I am sure will be created today. To those that have lost their father's remember the special moments you shared.

What exactly is the meaning behind the engagement ring and how did it come about??
The gift of a ring is said to be that of promised love, with the circular shape of the ring symbolizing eternal love and unity. The ring is said to be placed on the left "ring finger" to follow what was thought to be the "vena amoris", the vein of love. It was believed in Egyptian times that a vein ran from the left "ring finger" to the heart. The tradition still follows today of placing the engagement ring on the forth finger. During the medieval era the tradition of the of the engagement ring was instituted by Pope Innocent III, when he mandated that there be a waiting period from engagement to marriage. Only the wealthiest nobles could afford precious stones for their rings, so most engagement rings were made of simple metal bands. When large portion of the population could afford rings with precious stones, engagement rings became more stylized, many including sets of stones with personal meaning. A nice tradition that came about was using the the birthstone of the engaged couple. During the Victorian era it became a tradition for engagement rings to spell out a message with precious stones,the initials of the stones spelled out a message: Lapis, Opal, Variscite, and Emerald for LOVE. Other engagement rings during this era also contained a compartment for a lock of the betrothed hair. The modern day tradition of a diamond engagement rings is largely due to an advertising campaign by De Beers, the worlds leading diamond company. In 1947 they ran an add campaign with the slogan "A Diamond is Forever". This campaign is still known as the best advertising slogan of the 20th century. It is believed that a man's commitment is shown by how expensive the ring is, and many engagement rings are truly impressive. Modern day rings are all about personal style and have taken many new twists, with some couples even tattooing their rings on their finger.

Its a warm summer day here in the city and while most of the city is in Blackhawk glory today (Championship parade down Michigan and Wacker) I confess I have been dreaming of weddings. Good friends of mine announced that they are getting married and I have been emailing them ideas left and right. Are you looking for a way to give a nod to old traditions and a way to honor the man you are marrying?? Why not choose the time honored tradition of a groom's cake? The groom's cake is said to date back to the 17th century. It is believed that the groom's cake was originally a fruitcake, unfrosted or covered in a white frosting to match the brides cake. Before the invention of the freezer the cake was made with heavy fruits and then soaked in liquor to sustain a longer shelf life. It is believed that this is were the adaptation of keeping a portion of cake for your first anniversary derived from. The time honored fruitcake was seen as a southern tradition until the 1970's when we began to see chocolate and devil food cakes. In the south it was customary for the groom and his friends to escape to a parlor to drink, have a cigar and eat chocolate cake. Today's cakes have taken on a new look; often showing a grooms interest in a hobby, sport, a nod to his Alma mater or occupation. Grooms cakes are a way to bring in a more creative silly side.
As for when to serve the groom's cake, there are several options for that as well. Traditionally the grooms cake was cut up at the reception then packaged up for guests to take home as a "thank you". It is believed that if single female guests put the cake under their pillow they would dream of their future husband. Serving the grooms cake as a departing gift to your guests still a nice touch. The cake can also be served as an alternate dessert to the wedding cake, many brides now choosing to have dessert bars. Another idea is to serve the groom's cake at the rehearsal dinner as a toast to the groom. This is a very fitting option since the groom's family normally hosts the rehearsal dinner. You could also have mini groom's cakes made up to present to your attendants at this time as a "thank you". Whatever you choose to do remember to have fun with it and remember this is a way to include your groom who may be feeling a bit left out.

D.I.Y. Step

The Today show featured this great idea on the 10 o'clock hour. I thought what a wonderful idea it would be as a photo wall at a wedding. A few black and white photos and you have some great, inexpensive, personal decor. Although not just wedding decor but for those tweens and teens that like change things up all the time, just switch the photos and you can have a whole new look. Hope you love this quick diy idea as much as I did.

Items needed:
-photographs (best if you cut down a 5x7 print)
-jewel cases
-cardboard or foam board
-scissors
-a ruler
-tape (double sided)
-Velcro tape

To assemble:
1. Remove the plastic inside of CD case and all paper inserts
2. Using the paper inserts as a template cut your cardboard/foam board to size, this will be used as photo backing
2. Trim your photos to size, should be 5 3/8 x 4 5/8
3. Attach the cardboard to the backside of photo using the double sided tape
4. Put the photo in the backside of the jewel case, facing outward, close jewel case
5. Affix piece of Velcro to the side of the case with no photo, affix other side of Velcro to the wall where you want to place photo
6. Attach to wall and presto artwork

Whether you are just starting a business (like myself) or you are a big fish, I just read an amazing book, sure to help you or offer inspiration. "The Girls Guide to Building a Million Dollar Business" by Susan Wilson Solovic. Besides having written a great book, Susan is an entrepreneurial inspiration. She's written four best sellers and is appointed to the National Women's Business Council. This book was such an easy read I finished it in a day. It offers such good advice, from many different women run businesses. Susan gives you the inspiration to strive for your dreams and to dream big. I strongly recommend picking this book up. I finished reading this book and was so excited to get Steppe Stone Events moving forward. I hope you find it as inspirational as I do.
The next book I have dived into is "Adventures in Entrepreneurship Brewing Up a Business-from the founder of dogfish head craft brewery" by Sam Calagione. I find books on business very inspirational, you can learn something from all fields of business. I'll let you know what I think of this one, so far so good.

Hi y'all, I am new to this blogging experience and for that matter starting my own business. I will try to keep this amusing for you, it's based on my life after all, and if you know me well you know what an amusement ride it has been thus far. I have just recently moved to Chicago; Lakeview to be exact. I am a little town girl, trying to grow some big city legs. For as long as I can remember I have been fascinated with weddings...I think it all started with Cinderella. I planned elaborate parties for my barbies and painfully made my grandpa sit through tea parties with me. I started working in a wedding salon, Zelda's, when I was in high school. I was in heaven and was lucky to have a wonderful boss who taught me all she knew about the bridal industry. At 19, I was her right hand, I had a ball helping brides plan that special day. From picking invitations, to wedding party attire, to helping select favors and just plain give advice. I was bit by the wedding bug, and its an itch that has not gone away. I have helped friends and family plan the special moments in their lives, weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, baby showers, wedding showers...I am there with all my ideas, I am there setting everything up, I am there making sure all details come together, and that my friends and family get the days they envisioned. I am so happy to be there to build these memories for them. I have always thought you should love what you do and when I was offered the opportunity to make my dream a reality I could not pass at the chance. So here I am...taking the first step in making my dreams come true!
